Interview with Adam Freeland (2004):

HRFQ : In the album there is a track called ‘We want your soul’ and it has a couple of interesting phrases in there as well as the sample from Bill Hicks, saying “Go back to bed America, your country is in control again”. Were you making a statement about what is America is doing right now?

Adam : Well it wasn’t specifically about America. I think it was more about consumer culture in general. It’s been going on for a long time and it’s just getting worse. Bill Hicks is a long time hero of mine. We weren’t sure if we would be able to get the sample cleared but we did get it.

HRFQ : Have you been following Bill Hicks career?

Adam : Well he has passed away. I don’t think I really discovered him until about the time he passed away. But I pretty much have all of his stuff. He was a prophet, not just a comedian. He was very passionate about saying something.

HRFQ : Have you played ‘We want your soul’ in front of American people?

Adam : They love it. Whenever I play it in America I have had people come up to me and say you don’t understand how much people need to hear this message. I think there is a lot of suppression and fear to speak your mind in the States, in a supposed free speech society. It isn’t really is it, and that’s kind of the point of the track. I was really surprised how people reacted really positively.

HRFQ : On the topic of commercialism, you had the ‘Big Wednesday’ featured on the Animatrix soundtrack, how did it feel to have your music featured on such a big icon?

Adam : Well what ‘We want your soul’ is about is that we can’t escape it (commercialism). Living in the modern world. My records are sold in major stores, put out by JVC (laugh). I still have my own copyright but it’s hard to do anything these days and I have done my best to keep it totally independent. The whole point of the track is that we are all part of this picture whether you use technology or not. I think you have to take it case by case. I personally was a big fan of the Matrix and the Animatrix and was something creatively I wanted to be involved with. So I am happy for it to (‘Big Wednesday’) to be on there. It is a wicked bit of art and incredible animation. But we just got an offer from a large chain store in the US called Target. They wanted to use ‘We Want Your Soul’ for their new advertising campaign. But they wanted me to change the lyrics (laugh) which is pretty ironic. To be honest, we could’ve really done with the money and we could’ve have done with that kind of exposure in America because we haven’t put it out in America yet. But I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t have ‘We want your soul’ on an advert for one of America’s biggest corporations. I don’t think there is anything wrong with consuming, but I think I think it is important that there is an emphasis on ethics within that. If you know your sneakers are causing suffering in a sweatshop environment then maybe you should not considering buying them. I have a Mac laptop by Apple who are a large corporation. I love it, I make my music on it and I couldn’t do what I do without this machine. You know you can’t avoid but you have to inform yourself about each product.

This really, really pissed me off as one of the file samples is corrupt and I have had to go back and start again after two years of work! It's simply Robert Miles Children with loads of audio samples. It is meant to be listened to in stereo so you get the full effect of the explosions and voices of peace and war. I am going to finish this one day but I have to track down all the samples all over again :(

It was my very first mash up and it has a message which is summed up beautifully by Bill Hicks 'It's Just a Ride' which I let run almost in full. The end is a very young child responding to a bird singing. It is that simplicity of vision that I hoped to capture, especially as my technical skills were lacking when I started. I may make my own tune to this, who knows?

It has a deliberate 80's drum sound in the intro, just don't ask me why. All I wanted was something that was banging!

I hope to edit this down soon as I'm not happy with it as it is, especially the sound levels.This was one I never got back to but having listened again I just might do that sooner rather than later as it doesn't sound far off.

An Evening with Ólafur Arnalds

I discovered Ólafur Arnalds a while back and was immediately moved by his music. From his YouTube channel I've watched in awe at his improvisation skills building emotive soundscapes almost at will.

Now there is this brilliant concept. For 7 days, Ólafur "invites the audience into the comfort of his living room, where the songs will be recorded live and the whole process filmed. The songs will instantly be released in form of free MP3 downloads and videos to stream - straight from Ólafur's Reykjavík apartment." It's a mixture of improvised songs and unreleased material.

I don't agree with the sentiment (see below) but this is a funky tune and as a self confessed mashhead I couldn't help but admire the aesthetics of mashing Max Keiser into a funky song you can dance to.

With a little bit of work call it 'polishing', this could and should be released for Christmas to take on the Great Satans: Beliebers and Simon CowellBeasts. I would of course change the words 'David Cameron 'because otherwise this will upset the Kraken and he'll demand a bigger tithe. I know no one has ever seen this Kraken but it scares me. To go with my simultaneous post over at GingerZilla (a home of truth, love and laughter and the odd "mandatory conspiracy") and The Bleeding Nose Shelter (where I vent my Metal Mashing Mad spleen), I thought I'd have some rather tasty electronic remixes of the Rage Against the Machine Classic and British Number One, Killing in the Name of. In tribute to the #occupy movement, which was itself inspired by the Arab Spring, I post something every #OccupyFriday as it was always after Friday prayer that the People took to the street for their beliefs.

I am in awe at the spirit of humanity that is showing itself across the globe. Music is what makes us one, because I believe in seeing people as human beings first and foremost. I cannot get Katy Perry out of my head, so now I want mashup artists banned! To show my contempt I'm compiling these dreadful mashup's in one place - even the 8 minute video for Last Friday Night. This is my version of an audio prison where I can visit her when I want.

Lesane Parish Crooks, known to the world as Tupac Shakur died 15 years ago today aged just 25 after being shot in Las Vegas six days beforehand. I never quite 'got it' at the time as what I perceived as his overt violence put me off. Time does sometimes gloss over our faults but the more I have listened to Tupac the more I see the human being underneath the gangsta rap persona. Both tracks featured are posthumous Tupac releases. Phil Retro Spector is the "Undisputed Master of Melancholy of the Audio-Visual Bootleg Scene".

This melancholy may be related to the perpetual rains in the Emerald Isles which has affected not only his musical output but that of other Irish creators through the ages. It could be the economic malaise and the dreadfully oppressed recent history of the Irish which makes them "a people of deep cultural sorrow". It could explain why after listening to Phil's sublime mashups I have the urge to grab sharp implements.

However, even though the GingerZilla is a Celt (the Ginger being a bit of a give away), tradition is no excuse for the video for Chasing The Broken Hearted, "#8 in the 100 Greatest Mash Up’s of All Time" which has ruined my memories of Snoopy forever.

“Be aware of the Tricknology”

In July this year the hugely talented and pioneering Guru (Keith Elam) passed away. He was “one-half of [an] iconic hip hop duo GangStarr [with DJ Premier] before instigating a groundbreaking fusion of rap with live jazz via his Jazzmatazz album projects.” [1] You may recognise him for providing the voice of 8-Ball in Grand Theft Auto.

I wanted to do a fitting tribute with hip-hop as I believe it should be – voices of struggle and freedom rising above the oppression. Voices that come from the heart and soul where we are all one blood, united through our diversity in the great struggle to free. This is the aural hip-hop version of mind blowing sex as opposed to modern hip hop’s equivalent of a lyrical wank in the bathroom. Listen on the radio to the lyrics of a modern hip-hop track and then ‘Behold the Revolutionist’ and you’ll see a bit world of difference:

“Too many tears of sorrow
Too many years of struggle
Too many drops of blood
Too many problems to juggle
Too few jobs available
Too few schools equipped
Too few role models
Behold the Revolutionist”

If you feel inclined then I would highly recommend 93’s Guru's Jazzmatazz, Vol. 1 which recalls wonderful memories of lounging in a park and nodding my head. It’s a truly mind bending fusion of Hip-Hop and Jazz.

“Back around ’93 - when I first came up with the Jazzmatazz concept - I was noticing how a lot of cats were digging in the crates and sampling jazz breaks to make hip hop records...But, while I thought that was cool, I wanted to take it to the next level and actually create a new genre, by getting the actual dudes we were sampling into the studio to jam over hip hop beats with some of the top vocalists of the time. You know, the whole thing was experimental, but I knew it was an idea that would spawn some historic music.” [2]

Influences: GURU (well obviously), Hip-Hop, Electro, Garage, Dubstep, Drum ‘n’ Bass, Freedom and Head Nodding.

According to the BBC, killjoys at EMI Publishing have removed from YouTube the spoof Newport State Of Mind, which parodies Jay-Z , “due to a "copyright claim".

I never understand the urge to ban as it often has the opposite effect, for example, the Sex Pistols’ God Save the Queen is “the most heavily censored record in British history” – but it has achieved near immortality for it. Banning ‘Relax’ didn’t do Frankie Goes to Hollywood any harm either. Maybe this is what EMI want – notoriety and more exposure for an okay song bludgeoned to death by Jay-Z (the solo Alica Keys version is far superior). More frightening would be the possibility that EMI, like most major record companies, are re-enacting the mass panic of peak oil (in their case peak sales) and are going to grab everything they can on the plummet downwards as they deluge us with an ever increasing array of shite music allowing creativity to go down the pan.

I don’t agree with bans but as I have said before this only relates to banning Tweenies from buying records without supervision…but that was merely to sate my aesthetic tastes. Newport State of Mind, a clear parody and tribute, only enhances the original giving it continued exposure, which tends to mean more records sold. If you aren’t being parodied, then let’s face it you or your song really have made it, as a thousand Lady Gaga spoofs and mixes can testify to. Some would contend that banning it draws attention away from the desperate plight of the people of Wales, which my mate Smiffy once described as a third world country (and on that day I found it difficult to argue).

However on the flip-side EMI’s statement (of repression?) said "when a song is created based wholly on any of our writers' works, those writers need to grant their permission.”

Now this may just be me, but mash-ups are not “based wholly” on a writers work, being made up of two or more parts (especially if you are Earworm or Norwegian Recycling). Earworm has even done official mash-ups which get a fair amount of airplay on BBC Radio One (and cheer up my mornings no end).

It’s been almost a year since my last post....

I would apologise but since I have been busy fighting the forces of Evil in all it's forms (including my dropped hard drive!!!) I won’t. Some things needed to go on the back burner for the greater good, including this blog. But after the untimely intermission....The GingerZilla is back.

My hiatus was not unproductive and there are loads of of other projects I have enmeshed myself in to keep my sanity whilst the forces of evil nibbled away at me.

These may, or may not, see the light of day. ‘Epics’ (ahem) such as:

Remixes of Röyksopp, Celldweller, N.A.S.A (an early mix is now on soundcloud), Robert Miles and John Legend (if I can ever replace the ******* stems).

As well as a host of originals and maybe even a couple of mixtapes at some point. There could even be an album, but considering I haven’t released sweet fa in a year it may be worth setting my sights lower...at least musically, cos’ the world is still ripe for takeover, on a Tuesday.

I found vocals with the help of the late Notorious BIG with Eminem on toking duties. I hated the Biggie's music at the time, but liked his vocal style. This mash-up helped me appreciate his lyrical style even more. The words leave something to be desired but as I grew up on rock music it's best not to cast any stones.

It's really just a cut and paste job with a few tweaks and I left the guitar parts bare because they rawk! Turn the volume up on this one and pretend you're Angus Young. AIR GUITAR ALERT!

You may have noticed a lack of posts on here of late this is for two reasons.

The first is I am now a member of the AudioPornCentral family and have been featuring my posts there. I wish to express my gratitude to Simon Iddol for the opportunity. APC recently came #26 in the BT Digital Music Awards 08 as well as being a TypePad featured blog. This is what they had to say:

Even before I joined the APC family I checked the site daily because there was always something to listen to/look at. The only problem with the site is the word 'porn' may prevent you from looking at work (unless you know someone in the IT department) otherwise you have NO excuse!

The other reason is I am busy in the studio making mashups (6 at the last count) which will appear here. I have a pile of old instrumentals and sounds I'm working my way through, but in the meantime, I've uploaded some older material at Sound Cloud which can listen to/comment on.

Another feature due is an exclusive interview with Dlay who Laurent Garnier said of a recent soapsudcity compilation "I like Dlay tracks 1 and 2, I will present this on my radio show."

In the meantime AC/DC have released a new album which I shall part cash for as soon as I let myself out of the studio. Until then here's a preview:

Recycling Norway

Norwegian Recycling [what a great name for a mash-up artist] has been doing exactly what he says on the tin and has recycled two tracks by Norwegian hip-hop crew Karpe Diem and thrown them in with Justin Timberlake's (feat. T.I.) track 'My Love', along with Swedish Rapper Promoe's 2004 track 'Winona Ryder' to err... recycle them too!

NR has also recently featured in the Philippine Daily Inquirer discussing music, mashups and his future plans. It's definitely worth a read for being a nice open piece on the art of mash-ups and go to his website to download the rar or torrent files for these mash-ups.

WAR OF CONFUSION

This is definitely worth viewing and hearing. Virtual DJ has spent the last three months working on a video for the mash-up War of Confusion he did back in March. You can see it's been a labour of love and the message is brutally honest.

"Do I have a political agenda with this video?' he says in his blog post to accompany the video 'No, but like any sane person I am disgusted by the atrocities and accompanying cynicism that occurs on our planet. And we grow indifferent to many of the news about it. I hope this video shows that wars, neglect, famine, etc are no trivial matters at all and definitely not glamorous."

I was saddened recently when I heard the Violent Femmes classic 'Blister in the Sun' on a Fosters advertisement. I had to do a double take and the Violent Femmes, an Alternative rock, underground band (that sold more than most underground bands) who were massively influential (their songs have appeared in tv shows, movies, video games and have been covered widely) greatly went down in my estimation as complete sell outs.
The Violent Femmes are not a struggling or emerging band and so having one of their songs used in a commercial reminded me of a Bill Hicks quote:
"Here's the deal, folks, you do a commercial, you're off the artistic roll call forever, end of story ... If you do a commercial, there's a price on your head, everything you say is suspect...You know, if you're young and struggling, OK, I'll look the other way. Still, you do a commercial and you're off the artistic roll call forever and that goes for everyone ... except Willie Nelson. With a $30 million dollar tax debt, Willie's pockets were a little deeper than the rest of ours."
I have included a video of the advert below for anyone reading this not in the UK who may not have the foggiest what I'm on about. For the rest of you - don't watch this shite (it's rammed down your throat anyway).

However despite my chagrin that the VF sold out and had climbed the ladder to become suckers of Satan's scaly black pecker (yes another Bill Hicks quote - I keep doing them but I can't help it, honestly) I then found out that the song had been used in a Wendy's (the burger chain) advert beforehand. Yet, just as I thought all hope was lost I saw a comment by Violent Femmes' bassist Brian Ritchie, in reply to a blog that shares my disgust of such a great song being 'prostituted'.

For the fans who rightfully are complaining about the Wendy's burger advertisement featuring Blister in the Sun. Gordon Gano is the publisher of the song and Warners is the record company. When they agree to use it there's nothing the rest of the band can do about it, because we don't own the song or the recording. That's showbiz. Therefore when you see dubious or in this case disgusting uses of our music you can thank the greed, insensitivity and poor taste of Gordon Gano. It is his karma that he lost his songwriting ability many years ago, probably due to his own lack of self-respect as his willingness to prostitute our songs demonstrates. Neither Gordon (vegetarian) nor me (gourmet) eat garbage like Wendy's burgers. I can't endorse them because I disagree with corporate food on culinary, political, health, economic and environmental grounds. However I see my life's work trivialized at the hands of my business partner over and over again, although I have raised my objections numerous times. As disgusted as you are I am moreso.

I could not have put it better.
Unfortunately whilst trying to locate the Fosters advert (above) I had the misfortune to view this complete piece of shite, which is trying to sell Fosters to the Aussie's (hint: they do not drink this fizzy piss water).

It is truly an utterly appalling advert. It tries to be all 'matey' but it's just an advertising exec trying to appeal to patriotic sensibilities and failing miserably. I was born Down Under and I'm offended by this bollocks. It starts by trying to dispel the myths of Aussie's being crocodile wrestling, Kangaroo pet owning and then tries to build into a patriotic fervour. Mash Up DJ Wax Audio who I have mentioned in previous posts commented:

We're not racist in Australia BUT... when we gather in drunken mobs of 5000 to bash "lebs and wogs" in "defence" of our beaches it's OK for Alan Jones (Sydney's number one shock-jock) to spur them on - especially when the country's top politicians back him up. The message to these "middle eastern grubs" is simple: "I come from the land down under, you better run, you better take cover".

After viewing this advert and the type of people it is trying to appeal to (despite the 'normal' looking bloke at the end) I would suggest that the drunken mob, could, very possibly have been drinking Fosters.
Is this the kind of Australia that John Howard created whilst he bent over to take George W's wiener?
No wonders Australians couldn't give a XXXX for Fosters!

Just do yourself a favour and listen to this Mash-Up. Titled Imagine This 'sung' by none other than The Zealous Fanatical Chimp in the Whitehouse (a.k.a. George Dubbya Bush). It's a delightful mash up of Imagine and "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" by John Lennon with cut speeches by the leader of the serf world. Yoko Ono even approves of this (I'm being serious here).The video is below:

I'd also recommend listening to WIPED OFF THE MAP which a year on is more apt than ever since the media are intent on us commiting mass genocide on another nation in the name of Operation Iranian Liberation.

Both tracks are by Wax Audio a Mash-Up artist who does a cracking mix of political stuff such as these examples and downright party mixes that are just amazing (Maiden Goes to Hollywood being an epic). At first you are incredulous at the absurdity and audacity but then it kicks in and you have a stupid grin creep up your face.
Anyway back to Iran, I'll leave it to Wax Audio to sum up:
